What is a chromatic tuner?

A chromatic tuner can tune to any of the 12 notes in the Western chromatic scale, as opposed to instrument-specific tuners that only check a fixed set of strings. This makes it useful for guitar, bass, ukulele, violin, brass instruments, and vocals.

The tuner shows the nearest note name (A, Bb, C#, etc.) and an octave number. It also shows how many cents sharp or flat you are. 100 cents equals one semitone, so being 50 cents flat means you are halfway between two notes.

Standard tuning for common instruments

Guitar (standard): E2, A2, D3, G3, B3, E4 (low to high).

Bass guitar: E1, A1, D2, G2 (low to high).

Ukulele (standard): G4, C4, E4, A4 (low to high).

Violin: G3, D4, A4, E5 (low to high).

Frequently asked questions

What does A4 = 440 Hz mean?

A4 is the A above middle C. 440 Hz is the concert pitch standard used by most orchestras and instrument manufacturers worldwide. Some orchestras tune to A4 = 442 Hz or 443 Hz for a brighter sound, but 440 Hz is the default for this tuner.

Why does the note jump around?

Pitch detection is harder at the start and end of a note when the amplitude is low. Pluck or bow the string cleanly in the middle of its sustain for the steadiest reading. The tuner applies smoothing to reduce jumpiness.

Does the tuner work on mobile?

Yes. Most modern iOS and Android browsers support microphone access in the browser. You will be prompted to grant permission the first time you tap "Enable Microphone."
