What is a metronome?

A metronome produces a steady click at a fixed tempo measured in beats per minute (BPM). Musicians use it to develop consistent timing, practice difficult passages slowly, and lock in a groove before recording.

The most effective practice technique: start 20 BPM slower than the target tempo. Once you play the passage cleanly five times in a row, increase by 5 BPM. Accuracy at 60 BPM builds faster than grinding at 120.

How to choose a time signature

4/4 (common time) is the default for pop, rock, and R&B. Four beats per bar, quarter note gets the beat.

3/4 (waltz time) has three beats per bar. The "one" beat gets the accent. Common in ballads, folk, and country.

2/4 is common in marches and fast polka. Two strong beats per bar.

6/8 groups six eighth notes into two groups of three, giving a rolling, compound feel. Common in folk, Celtic music, and slow ballads.

Frequently asked questions

What BPM should I practice at?

Start 20 BPM below the target. Play the passage cleanly five times in a row, then increase by 5 BPM. Accuracy built at a slow tempo transfers to full speed; sloppy reps at tempo do not.

Can I use the keyboard to control the metronome?

Yes. Press spacebar to start and stop from anywhere on the page.

What does the accent on beat 1 do?

The first beat of each bar plays at a slightly higher pitch so you can feel where the bar starts without counting every beat aloud.

What is the difference between BPM and time signature?

BPM sets how fast the beats happen. Time signature sets how many beats are in each bar and which note value counts as one beat. A song at 120 BPM in 4/4 has four beats per bar ticking at two per second.
