What is a musical scale?
A scale is an ordered set of notes within an octave. The pattern of whole steps (W) and half steps (H) between the notes defines the scale's character. A major scale (W W H W W W H) sounds bright and resolved; a natural minor scale (W H W W H W W) sounds darker and more melancholic.
Scales are the foundation of songwriting: they determine which chords sound "inside" the key, which melody notes feel stable or tense, and what emotional color the song carries before a single lyric is written.
Modes explained
Modes are rotations of the major scale starting on different degrees. They share the same notes as a parent major key but sound distinct because they start on a different note, shifting which intervals are at the beginning.
Dorian (W H W W W H W) is a minor mode with a raised 6th. It sounds jazz-influenced or funky. D Dorian uses the same notes as C major.
Phrygian (H W W W H W W) has a distinctly Spanish or metal flavor because of the flat 2nd degree.
Lydian (W W W H W W H) is a major mode with a raised 4th. It sounds dreamy or otherworldly, common in film scores.
Mixolydian (W W H W W H W) is a major mode with a flat 7th. It drives rock and blues progressions with a dominant feel.
Locrian (H W W H W W W) is rarely used as a tonal center because its tonic chord is diminished, but it appears in metal and avant-garde music.

What is the difference between major and minor?
The major scale has a major third (W W H) from its root, giving it a bright sound. The natural minor (Aeolian) has a minor third (W H W), sounding darker. The difference is one note: the 3rd is one semitone lower in minor.
What is the pentatonic scale used for?
The pentatonic scale (5 notes) removes the half steps from the major or minor scale, making it very singable and hard to play "wrong" over a chord. Most guitar solos and folk melodies stay within a pentatonic box.
What scale should I write my song in?
Start with Major for an upbeat, resolved feel or Minor for something darker and more emotional. Dorian is a great option if you want minor with a little more brightness. There is no wrong choice; the scale is a creative constraint, not a rule.
