How to use the chord transposer
Paste your chord chart into the left box. Set the original key under "From key" and choose the key you want to transpose to under "To key". The right box updates instantly with the transposed chords.
You can mix chord names and lyrics in the same text. The transposer only changes tokens that look like chord symbols (uppercase root note followed by an optional quality). Regular words are left untouched.
Why transpose chords?
Vocal range: the most common reason. If the original key puts the chorus too high or too low for your voice, transposing by a few semitones brings it into a comfortable range without changing any of the relationships between chords.
Open guitar keys: certain keys (G, D, A, E, C) sit naturally on guitar because they use many open strings. Transposing a song written at the piano into one of these keys makes it easier to play without a capo.
Capo use: if you want to play guitar shapes in one key but sound in another, put a capo at the difference in semitones and transpose the chart to the capo-key shapes.
Supported chord types
The transposer handles major (C, G), minor (Am, Dm), dominant 7th (G7, B7), major 7th (Cmaj7, Fmaj7), minor 7th (Am7), suspended (Csus2, Dsus4), augmented (Caug), diminished (Bdim), slash chords (G/B, Am/E), and combinations (Dm7, Gsus4, Fmaj9). If a symbol is not recognised as a chord, it passes through unchanged.
Frequently asked questions
Will it change my lyrics as well as my chords?
Only chord tokens are changed. A word like "Amazing" or "Before" is left alone because it does not match the chord pattern. If you have an isolated capital letter like "A" that is not a chord, it may be transposed; moving it to an inline position (e.g. inside a word) prevents that.
How many semitones are between two keys?
The semitone count is shown as a badge next to the key selectors once you choose different keys. There are 12 semitones in an octave. C to G is 7 up (or 5 down).
Does it handle enharmonic equivalents?
Yes. The output uses the preferred spellings for the target key (e.g., Bb instead of A#, Db instead of C#) following standard key signature conventions.
